The man behind the whispers about Obama

Andy Martin helped spread false rumors about Dem that spread across Web

By Jim Rutenberg

The most persistent falsehood about Senator Barack Obama’s background first hit in 2004 just two weeks after the Democratic convention speech that helped set him on the path to his presidential candidacy: “Obama is a Muslim who has concealed his religion.”

That statement, contained in a press release, spun a complex tale about the ancestry of Mr. Obama, who is Christian.

The press release was picked up by a conservative Web site, FreeRepublic.com, and spread steadily as others elaborated on its claims over the years in e-mail messages, Web sites and books.   It continues to drive other false rumors about Mr. Obama’s background.

Just last Friday, a woman told Senator John McCain at a town-hall-style meeting, “I have read about him,” and “he’s an Arab.” Mr. McCain corrected her.  Click to view

Until this month, the man who is widely credited with starting the cyberwhisper campaign that still dogs Mr. Obama was a secondary character in news reports, with deep explorations of his background largely confined to liberal blogs.

False claims

But an appearance in a documentary-style program on the Fox News Channel watched by three million people last week thrust the man, Andy Martin, and his past into the foreground. The program allowed Mr. Martin to assert falsely and without challenge that Mr. Obama had once trained to overthrow the government.

An examination of legal documsents and election filings, along with interviews with his acquaintances, revealed Mr. Martin, 62, to be a man with a history of scintillating if not always factual claims. He has left a trail of animosity — some of it provoked by anti-Jewish comments — among political leaders, lawyers and judges in three states over more than 30 years.

He is a law school graduate, but his admission to the Illinois bar was blocked in the 1970s after a psychiatric finding of “moderately severe character defect manifested by well-documented ideation with a paranoid flavor and a grandiose character.”

Though he is not a lawyer, Mr. Martin went on to become a prodigious filer of lawsuits, and he made unsuccessful attempts to win public office for both parties in three states, as well as for president at least twice, in 1988 and 2000. Based in Chicago, he now identifies himself as a writer who focuses on his anti-Obama Web site and press releases.

'I’m a colorful person'
Mr. Martin, in a series of interviews, did not dispute his influence in Obama rumors.

“Everybody uses my research as a takeoff point,” Mr. Martin said, adding, however, that some take his writings “and exaggerate them to suit their own fantasies.”

As for his background, he said: “I’m a colorful person. There’s always somebody who has a legitimate cause in their mind to be angry with me.”

When questions were raised last week about Mr. Martin’s appearance and claims on “Hannity’s America” on Fox News, the program’s producer said Mr. Martin was clearly expressing his opinion and not necessarily fact.

It was not Mr. Martin’s first turn on national television.  The CBS News program “48 Hours” in 1993 devoted an hourlong program to what it called his prolific filing of frivolous lawsuits.  He has filed so many lawsuits that a judge barred him from doing so in any federal court without preliminary approval.

He prepared to run as a Democrat for Congress in Connecticut, where paperwork for one of his campaign committees listed as one purpose “to exterminate Jew power.”   He ran as a Republican for the Florida State Senate and the United States Senate in Illinois. When running for president in 1999, he aired a television advertisement in New Hampshire that accused George W. Bush of using cocaine.

In the 1990s, Mr. Martin was jailed in a case in Florida involving a physical altercation.

Those from his past amazed
His newfound prominence, and the persistence of his line of political attack — updated regularly on his Web site and through press releases — amazes those from his past.

“Well, that’s just a bookend for me,” said Tom Slade, a former chairman of the Florida Republican Party, whom Mr. Martin sued for refusing to support him.   Mr. Slade said Mr. Martin was driven like “a run-over dog, but he’s fearless.”

Given Mr. Obama’s unusual background, which was the focus of his first book, it was perhaps bound to become fodder for some opposed to his candidacy.

Mr. Obama was raised mostly by his white mother, an atheist, and his grandparents, who were Protestant, in Hawaii.  He hardly knew his father, a Kenyan from a Muslim family who variously considered himself atheist or agnostic, Mr. Obama wrote.   For a few childhood years, Mr. Obama lived in Indonesia with a stepfather he described as loosely following a liberal Islam.

Theories about Mr. Obama’s background have taken on a life of their own.  But independent analysts seeking the origins of the cyberspace attacks wind up at Mr. Martin’s first press release, posted on the Free Republic Web site in August 2004.

Its general outlines have turned up in a host of works that have expounded falsely on Mr. Obama’s heritage or supposed attempts to conceal it, including “Obama Nation,” the widely discredited best seller about Mr. Obama by Jerome R. Corsi. Mr. Corsi opens the book with a quote from Mr. Martin.

“What he’s generating gets picked up in other places,” said Danielle Allen, a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University who has investigated the e-mail campaign’s circulation and origins, “and it’s an example of how the Internet has given power to sources we would have never taken seriously at another point in time.”

Ms. Allen said Mr. Martin’s original work found amplification in 2006, when a man named Ted Sampley wrote an article painting Mr. Obama as a secret practitioner of Islam.   Quoting liberally from Mr. Martin, the article circulated on the Internet, and its contents eventually found their way into various e-mail messages, particularly an added claim that Mr. Obama had attended “Jakarta’s Muslim Wahhabi schools. Wahhabism is the radical teaching that created the Muslim terrorists who are now waging jihad on the rest of the world.”

Mr. Obama for two years attended a Catholic school in Indonesia, where he was taught about the Bible, he wrote in “Dreams From My Father,” and for two years went to an Indonesian public school open to all religions, where he was taught about the Koran.

Mr. Sampley, coincidentally, is a Vietnam veteran and longtime opponent of Mr. McCain and Senator John Kerry, both of whom he accused of ignoring his claims that American prisoners were left behind in Vietnam.  He previously portrayed Mr. McCain as a “Manchurian candidate.”  Speaking of Mr. Martin’s influence on his Obama writings, Mr. Sampley said, “I keyed off of his work.”

'Secret' Muslim allegations
Mr. Martin’s depictions of Mr. Obama as a secret Muslim have found resonance among some Jewish voters who have received e-mail messages containing various versions of his initial theory, often by new authors and with new twists.

In his original press release, Mr. Martin wrote that he was personally “a strong supporter of the Muslim community.” But, he wrote of Mr. Obama, “it may well be that his concealment is meant to endanger Israel.”   He added, “His Muslim religion would obviously raise serious questions in many Jewish circles.”

Yet in various court papers, Mr. Martin had impugned Jews.

A motion he filed in a 1983 bankruptcy case called the judge “a crooked, slimy Jew who has a history of lying and thieving common to members of his race.”

In another motion, filed in 1983, Mr. Martin wrote, “I am able to understand how the Holocaust took place, and with every passing day feel less and less sorry that it did.”

In an interview, Mr. Martin denied some statements against Jews attributed to him in court papers, blaming malicious judges for inserting them.

But in his “48 Hours” interview in 1993, he affirmed a different anti-Semitic part of the affidavit that included the line about the Holocaust, saying, “The record speaks for itself.”

When asked Friday about an assertion in his court papers that “Jews, historically and in daily living, act through clans and in wolf pack syndrome,” he said, “That one sort of rings a bell.”

He said he was not anti-Semitic. “I was trying to show that everybody in the bankruptcy court was Jewish and I was not Jewish,” he said, “and I was being victimized by religious bias.”

'Moderately severe personality defect'
In discussing the denial of his admission to the Illinois bar, Mr. Martin said the psychiatric exam listing him as having a “moderately severe personality defect” was spitefully written by an evaluator he had clashed with.

Mr. Martin, who says he is from a well-off banking and farming family, is clearly pleased with his newfound attention.  But, he said, others have added to his work in “scary” ways.

“They Google ‘Islam’ and ‘Obama’ and my stuff comes up and they take that and kind of use that — like a Christmas tree, and they decorate it,” he said.  For instance, he said, he did not necessarily ascribe to a widely circulated e-mail message from the Israeli right-wing activist Ruth Matar, which includes the false assertion, “If Obama were elected, he would be the first Arab-American president.”

He said he had at least come to “accept” Mr. Obama’s word that he had found Jesus Christ.   His intent, he said, was only to educate.

This article, "The Man Behind the Whispers About Obama," first appeared in The New York Times.

Martin focus of Fox One-Hour Special - Lies Propagated

Martin's hate rhetoric and distorted lies earns him national coverage Fox's Sean Hannity's one hour special entitled, "Obama and Friends - A history of radicalism" which is viewed by more then 3 million viewers.   It has been my own personal observation that if you tell lies that people want to believe, you begin will believe them unquestionably and then, they themselves will spread those lies.  This is a dangerous receipt for hate - and it has occurred many times throughout history.  It's based on fear and ignorance.

"Obama Is An Arab"-Says McCain Volunteer In Letters

From vicious racist lies, to fact on a Fox Hannity special, to a campaign that is now whipped into a frenzy, these lies slowly become fact that can no longer be dispelled.  Take the John McCain campaign volunteer Gayle Quinnel, when at a Oct 10, 2008 McCain rally, she made the now famous quote that "Obama is an Arab".  She was finally corrected by John McCain when he took the microphone away from her, but does she think differently once corrected.  No.  In the clip below, we find out that she has taken it upon herself to mail out 400 letters spreading the same vicious lies.

Where is this headed?  This is not good.   These ill-informed people want to believe that because Obama had a father who was for a part of his life, a muslim - a liberal one at that, that it's in his blood, and somehow, having Arab ancestry in your blood, your are conspiring to blow up something here on our shores.  It's insane, and it's dangerous.

Reporter asks Gayle Quinnel about claim "Obama is an Arab".

Privatized Social Security - Where would you be now?

"Risky Plan" TV Ad

I saw this ad on television and it stopped me dead in my tracks.  Three years ago, John McCain campaigned for George Bush's effort to risk social security in the stock market to privatize it.  Even then, I though "what if a company fails.  Well, look at us today!
  • Lehman Brothers - Bankrupt
  • AIG - Bailed out on the brink of collapse
  • Merril Lynch - SOLD
  • Washington Mutual - SOLD
  • Wacovia - SOLD
What if Bush and McCain had gotten their way?
In every case, investors of those same companies lost their shirts.  Where would that retired person be today?

For the record, McCain voted 3 times in favor of privatizing your social security.
  • Senate Vote #68:  3/16/06
  • Senate Vote #56:  4/1/98
  • Senate Vote #77:  4/29/98
John McCain may not have to worry about his retirement years when he dumped his wife to marry an heiress to an Anheuser-Busch beer distributor fortune, but then again, he's out of touch with what is really happening in this country of ours.

Part 1 of 2: Obama and terrorism - Live from the rally in Strongville, OH

The McCain-Palin Mob at the McCain / Palin rally.

In all the years of following the many political races to the office of Presidency, I have never seen a race that is so ugly and mean spirited.

Is this really where we are in this nation.  I feel like I'm at a lynching in the planning stages.

This is truly the ugly underbelly of our nation and this is embarrassing.   These people actually believe the preposterous lies that they are being spread.

What if Obama was McCain, and McCain Obama?

Before I start on this one, I want to make it clear that I did not write this.  I did find it very thought provoking.

Obama/Biden vs. McCain/Palin

What if things were switched around?  Think about it.  Would the country's collective point of view be different?  Could racism be the culprit?

Ponder the following:

What if the Obamas had paraded five children across the stage, including a three-month-old infant and an unwed, pregnant teenage daughter?

What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard Law Review?

What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?

What if McCain had only married once, and Obama was a divorcee?

What if Obama was the candidate who left his first wife after a severe disfiguring car accident, when she no longer measured up to his standards?

What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a long affair while he was still married?

What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became addicted to painkillers but also acquired them illegally through her charitable organization?

What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?

What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five? (The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s.)

What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?

What if Obama couldn't read from a teleprompter?

What if Obama was the one who had military experience that included discipline problems and a record of crashing seven planes?

What if Obama was the one who was known to display publicly, on many occasions, a serious anger management problem?

What if Michelle Obama's family had made their money from beer distribution?

What if the Obamas had adopted a white child?

You could easily add to this list. If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are?

This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another when there is a color difference.

How Wall Street Collapsed

I was asked by 3 separate, unrelated people, "Did you watch that piece of 60-Minutes on how Wall Street collapsed?".   When I came home, another person said that I had to seek out the same segment.  All told me that it described in simple terms, how the entire house of cards came  down, ultimately causing the global market to become paralyzed.  I watched this piece and was shocked.  It could have all been averted - if only there were simple rules in place.

Please take a moment to educate yourself with this very enlightening 60-Minutes segment entitled "Wall Street's Shadow Market".   It's 12:03 minutes in length, and worth watching every bit of it.  No - this is not an attack on any party.  Just the facts on what brought down the global financial markets.

Get informed - and then vote for a change.

There are a lot of people out there that haven't a clue on what caused our financial system to completely melt down, requiring the government to bail out Wall Street to the tune of $700 billion - and raising the already historic national debt from $482 trillion to $1.182 trillion.

How was this possible you ask?
Over regulation maybe?  Far from it.  It was the lack of regulation and the effects of de-regulation.  Said another way.  No rules.  NONE.

What do you get when you mix GREED and NO RULES?
Well, you have people making lots and lots of money, followed by people making promises they can't make, quickly followed by millions of people loosing their shirts, as well as millions of investors and pensioners.

But how you ask?
Banks lent out money for homes and properties that were already overpriced to start with, with interest-only loans, with no money down, and where the rate paid are very low to start and the principal actually increases instead of decreases over time.  Risky loans?  Well, once the bubble began to burst, these very loans became underwater risky loans.  Not good.  Not good at all.

Sound risky you say?  Well - not really.  Well - at least that's not what the investment banks said.  They were lending out investor's money - and in turn, they said that their investments were insured - well - kind of.  It sure did sound good.

So how were these risky debts insured?
Well, normally, a bank would secure these loans with an insurance policy.  Should a particular loan go bad, the insurance policy would back the bad debt.  Simple...  Well not so fast.  The problem was that backing loans with insured policies was too expensive - and more importantly, REGULATED by law.  Insured policies have to have funds available and on hand to protect the very policy they have insured.  In other words, there are rules and laws that must be obeyed.

"There's got to be an easier way," say the bankers !!!
So how do you insure these risky investments without following the rules, while at the same time, keeping your costs down?  You change the name of the insurance policy to "Credit Default Swap" - which are nothing more than undisclosed insurance contracts - which ARE NOT REGULATED, nor is there capital reserves to back those so-called insured policies.  Better yet, you tell your investors that they are secure.  So - the investor believes that his investment will return high profits while still being a safe bet.  PERFECT.

The bottom line is that these banks made a boatload of money while times were good, but the moment that the sub-prime loans started going belly up, and the banks started calling for their bad loans to be secured.  The problem was that these so-called secured loans started failing at record numbers.  Worse, there was not money to back these bad loans.  The money didn't come from reserves, but rather, funds that would have normally be used for lending.  When that money ran low, the banks themselves became insolvent overnight.  Banks weren't lending to other banks, banks weren't making loans, and the overnight, the banking industry came to a grinding halt.  In comes the $700 billion bailout and the panic spreads around the globe.

So - there you go.  Is having no rules in banking a good thing?

Fox News - Economy NOT top story.

I prefer watching Fox News for it's unbiased news !!!  I didn't really say that did I?  Slap me will ya.

Since Sept 28, 2007, we add $3.34 billion to the national debt.  That debt now stands at

Each day, we add another $3.34 billion per day to the national debt.  As of today, that debt has risen to $10,269,630,870,456.79   ($ 10.2 trillion).   We're in two wars, one of which was for the wrong reason.  Our banks are failing left and right, and Uncle Sam just bailed out Wall Street's bad investments to the tune of $700 Billion.  While all of this is happening, the Dow just tanked another $128 to $8451.19, down from $14,280 only months ago.

So what is Fox News covering.  Take a look.  Clue:  It's ain't the what the rest of us are watching.

The Keating Five Scandal - McCain One of the Five

The current economic crisis demands that we understand John McCain's attitudes about economic oversight and corporate influence in federal regulation.   Nothing illustrates the danger of his approach more clearly than his central role in the savings and loan scandal of the late '80s and early '90s.

John McCain was accused of improperly aiding his political patron, Charles Keating, chairman of the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association.

Today, John McCain is the only major party presidential nominee in US history to have been rebuked, censured or otherwise admonished after a Congressional ethics investigation, yet, his key election theme is "CHANGE IN WASHINGTON IS NEEDED".

At the very heart of the scandal was Keating's Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which took advantage of deregulation to make risky investments with its depositors' money.  McCain intervened on behalf of Charles Keating with federal regulators tasked with preventing banking fraud, and championed legislation to delay regulation of the savings and loan industry -- actions that allowed Keating to continue his fraud at an incredible cost to taxpayers.

When the savings and loan industry collapsed, Keating's failed company put taxpayers on the hook for $3.4 billion and more than 20,000 Americans lost their savings.   While Charles Keating was sentenced to prison for fraud, which resulted in the total collapse of Lincoln Savings, John McCain was reprimanded by the bipartisan Senate Ethics Committee, but the ultimate cost of that very crisis to American taxpayers reached more than $120 billion.

I would totally agree with John McCain in saying, "Change is needed in Washington".  And looking the other way when members of Congress are caught taking money for favors has to be not only stopped, but they need to be punished - not just asked to step down.

The Keating scandal is eerily similar to today's credit crisis, where a lack of regulation and cozy relationships between the financial industry and Congress has allowed banks to make risky loans and profit by bending the rules.  And in both cases, John McCain's judgment and values have placed him on the wrong side of history.

Educate yourself on the background of the Keating Five scandal below by clicking on the video. It was very enlightening to say the least - and it pertains to today's $700 Billion bailout of Wall Street.

Change is needed in Washington.

McCain's Temper - Tortured Past ?

John McCain has always been known as a hot-head.   Where might this quick temper and rage come from?

For the longest time, even before his run for for presidency, I knew he was a POW and was exposed to unthinkable acts of torture.  I have always been concerned about this and how this kind of treatment could affect any sound mind.

That said, I wanted to know more about his time as a POW.

Shot down over Hanoi
John was a jet fighter pilot during the Vietnam War, and as we have all learned, he has been called a hero for not just being a POW, but enduring years of tortures - literally.  Let me say right now, I am not writing this to attach the man, but rather, to raise the issue where might Senator McCain's temper might have found it's roots.

Life as a POW in the Hanoi Hilton
On Oct 26, 1967, John McCain's Skyhawk wing was blown off by a anti-aircraft missile near Hanoi.  His jet immediately went into a vertical inverted spin, causing him to bail out upside down at high speed.  The force of the ejection fractured McCains right arm in 3 places, his left arm, and his right leg and knocked him unconscious.  McCain landed in Truc Back Lake and nearly drowned.  Eventually, a mob pulled him ashore, spat on him, kicked him, and stripped him of his clothes.  His left shoulder was crushed with the butt of a rifle and he was bayoneted in his left foot and abdominal area.  He was shortly thereafter, rushed to the infamous "Hanoi Hilton" (Hoa Lo Prison) where is living hell was about to begin.

He was in bad physical condition when he reached the the prison.  His captors refused to give him medical care unless he gave them military information; they beat him and interrogated him, but McCain offered only his name, rank and serial number.  Having been trained as a figher pilot, John knew was lay ahead as a POW.

Near Death
Thinking that he was near death, McCain said he would give them more information if taken to the hospital, hoping he could then put his interrogators off once he was treated.  A prison doctor came and said it was too late, as McCain was about to die anyway.  Only when the North Vietnamese discovered that his father was a top admiral, did they give him medical attention.  It was then that his POW status made the front pages of the New York Times and Washington Post.  Interrogation and beatings resumed in the hospital; McCain gave the North Vietnamese his ship's name, squadron's name, and the attaches intended target.  (Disclosing this information was in violation of the U.S. Code of Conduct, which mcCain later wrote he regretted, although he saw the information as being of no practical use for his captors.)

Solitary Confinement
In March, 1968, McCain was put into solitary confinement, where he remained for two years.  Think about that - you live in a tiny box of a room, no ventilation, no sun, a hard board as a bed, and a horrible diet for two full years.  Having read this, I felt for the guy and questioned how would this have affected my spirit, my health, and most importantly, my mental well being.

In mid-June, Major Bai, commander of the North Vietnamese prison camp system, offered McCain a chance to return home early after discovering that John's father was   named Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Command.  McCain turned down the offer, which only made his captors more angry.  Bai's assistant told McCain that things would get very bad.

Ending one's own life
In late August 1968, a program of vigorous torture methods began on McCain.   It must have been a living hell.  I can't even begin to imagine what this must have been like.  The North Vietnamese used rope bindings to put him into prolonged, painful positions and severely beat him every two hours, all while he was suffering from dysentery.  His right leg was re-injured, his ribs were cracked, some teeth were broken at the gumline, and his left arm was re-fractured.  Lying in his own waste, his spirit was broken; the beginnings of a suicide attempt were stopped by guards.

After four days of this, McCain signed and taped an anti-American propaganda "confession" that said, in part, "I am a black criminal and I have performed the deeds of an air pirate.   I almost died, and the Vietnamese people saved my life, thanks to the doctors."  He used stilted Communist jargon and ungrammatical language to signal that the statement was forced.  McCain was haunted then and since with the belief that he had dishonored his country, his family, his comrades and himself by his statement, but as he later wrote, "I had learned what we all learned over there: Every man has his breaking point. I had reached mine."  His injuries left him incapable of raising his arms above his head to this day.  Under extreme duress, virtually all the POWs eventually yielded something to their captors.  McCain's solitary confinement ended in March, 1970.

Altogether, McCain was held as a prisoner of war for five and a half years.

Where am I going with this?
We often hear how violent criminal's pasts can often be traced back to an abusive household.  How many times have we witnessed young men who have killed their wives and kids, again, only to find that they have had a troubled past.  We even hear that men who have had long stays in civilian prisons and how they have become hardened and have developed hatred toward authoritative figures.   Now add isolation and torture to the mix and you know that this has to speed the process of change on the mind.  It has too.  How can this inhumane treatment not affect how one reacts to a crisis, to others speaking down to you?  How can it not affect your temper?

While I respect that John McCain served our nation well and did so honorably, I often question how his time as a tortured POW might have affected how he own anger, how he handles conflict and more importantly, how he might handle an international crisis.  Frankly, it worries me.  I seriously question his ability to made a rational decisions when it comes to the future of this nation knowing that Senator McCain has earned the nickname "Senator Hothead".  That worries me - and it should worry you too.  His repeated references to more wars, and a long and protracted conflict that may last this century should be seriously considered when it comes time to pulling the lever in the voting booth.  (See spine chilling McCain video - click here).

Wouldn't you think there might be a correlation between his tortured past and his quick tempter - him snapping over minor issues.  With so much at risk, with the U.S. already involved in two wars, does it really make sense to have a person who was tortured for years have the ability to wipe out nations with the press of a single button?  Does that not make you think about what might really happen?

Tina Fey is Sarah Palin on SNL Debate Skit

The following clip is the actual footage of the Saturday Night Live skit of the V.P. Debate where Tina Fey does a spot-on Palin portrayal that is her very best work to date in my opinion.  Not only was this piece timely, but it was really funny.  It's well worth watching if you want a good laugh.  The resemblance between Fey and Palin is remarkable.

McSAME Speaks to the Nation

McSame, made the mistake of giving a speech in front of a "green screen" that could be use to display an ever changing backdrop for each market they wanted to send the recorded video.  What a mistake.   That same night, Steven Colbert issued the "Green Screen Challenge" where the stock footage was posted for those who wanted to edit that raw video could.  This is one of the classic pieces that was on YouTube.  Classic.

Sarah Palin - Did she answer the question for you?

Sarah Palin Debate Flow Chart

Several times over the last week, I've received the now famous Sarah Palin Debate Flow Chart.  I posted that chart below, but in looking at it, I noticed a link to the site where it originated.

http://adennak.com/blog/wordpress/?p=92

The text was brilliant, and I wanted to post what was written.  I couldn't have said it better myself.

Summary:

I'd like to dissect what Sarah Palin said, or more importantly, what wasn't said.  I’d like to do a bit of a run down.  A list, if you will, of the things we’ve learned about Sarah Palin from her very limited, groomed, handled private interviews with Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric.

  • Sarah Palin isn’t sure what the Bush Doctrine is. She couldn’t even take a wild guess. Everyone who heard her ask “In what respect, Charlie?” knew it, no matter what sort of semantics argument you want to get into over what different meanings that phrase has encompassed.
  • Sarah Palin doesn’t know that Freddie Mac and Fannie May weren’t being funded by the federal government before their collapse.
  • Sarah Palin thinks that the $700 billion bailout has something to do with health care costs.
  • Sarah Palin can only name one Supreme Court case - Roe v. Wade. She couldn’t even conjure up Dred Scott, which even Bush was able to do in the second debate with John Kerry. Speaking of Bush, she couldn’t think of Bush v. Gore. Or Brown v. Board of Education. Or Hustler v. Falwell. Or FCC v. Pacifica (Carlin’s seven words). Or, and this is most stunning of all, Exxon v. Baker - concerning the Exxon Valdez. A case which rendered a ruling during her time as Governer of Alaska, and about which she made public statements in protest of the decision.
  • Sarah Palin either could not or would not name a single newspaper or magazine that she reads. She couldn’t think of one. Not the New York Times, the Daily News, the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune. Not Time, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Reports. Hell, she couldn’t even think of a local paper in Alaska. Sarah Palin, by the way, has a degree in Journalism. No shit.
  • Sarah Palin cannot name a single instance of John McCain favoring regulation of industry, despite being more than willing to lie right into the camera and say that McCain has been championing regulation for twenty-six years.

Warren Buffet - Current Financial Crisis and Support for Obama's Tax Plan

This morning, a friend sent me a link to an Oct 1, 2008 interview by Charlie Rose with financier Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway.  Mr. Buffett was also noted as currently the wealthiest man in the world.

The interview was a very insightful discussion about the current credit crisis (the Wall Street bailout) and what he sees as the likely scenario for America moving forward.  It is described as a "must watch video" for anyone interested in gaining knowledge about the current market conditions.

One point that surprised me was Warren Buffett's support for Barack Obama, his proposed tax plan and stimulus package of giving a tax rebate to low and middle class tax payers.

I've taken the liberty to highlight key moments of the interview and note where in the video these topics start on the time clock.  The video starts off slow, but gets much more interesting further in.  I would recommend viewing the full video if you have the time, otherwise, go to the topics that interest you below.

Time Stamp / Topic
  • 37:22  --  America - as good as it is, we'll going to have to share our supremacy.
  • 38:35  --  American debt:  We're consuming $ 2 billion per day more than we are producing in goods and services !
  • 40:45  --  What's all of this going to do to the price of the dollar?
  • 41:15  --  Senator Obama, who you support and the stimulus program he is proposing for the middle class.  Buffett agrees that is should be directed at this level and not be directed to the top 10%.
  • 41:38  --  Warren Buffett says, "I've never had it so good (under the current Republican tax structure).  I am paying the lowest tax rate in my entire life and that's CRAZY.  95% of Americans should be and can be paying less under the new Obama tax plan.  McCain is against that plan."
  • 41:56  --  People in my (Buffett's) situation should be paying more - not less taxes.
  • 42:10  --  A stimulus plan should be directed to "the people" (not the top 10%) who would in turn, spend it to buy goods and services, and thus help kick-start the economy.
  • 44:35  --  The fallacy that the top 1% of income earners pays more on a percentage basis is false and what they don't tell you.
If you have the time, take it to educate yourself on what is going on in our economy.  Warren Buffett breaks it down into a simple to understand concepts.

What was most interesting to me however, was his support for Barrack Obama.  You rarely hear this kind of rhetoric from the true capitalist - and after you hear why, you'll begin to understand that they feel that the party may soon be over and be asked to pay their fair share.

Failed Lehman Brother's Chief Gets $480 Million

Days from becoming the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history, Lehman Brothers steered millions to departing executives while pleading for a federal rescue !!!

Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee today grilled Lehman Brother's CEO Richard Fuld Jr. on whether it was true he himself took home some $480 million in compensation since 2000, and asked:  "Is that fair?"

Say what?  $480 million in compensation?  For running the 4th largest bank into the ground?   Can you only imaging how many investment dollars were plundered from pension funds by his irresponsible and greedy actions?

Fuld declared to the committee, "I take full responsibility for the decisions that I made and for the actions that I took."  He defended his actions as "prudent and appropriate".  "I feel horrible about what happened," Fuld said.

Prudent and appropriate? For driving Lehman into the ground?  He must feel like crap.  But wait.  He still has his $480 million in compensation !.   How can you sincerely feel horrible while still having $480 million in the bank.

Why is it that he is allowed to keep that $480 millions?  Not only should they go after those funds, they need to take his property, his assets, his cash - EVERYTHING.  He needs to feel the pain that his investors are now feeling.

Billions in earmarks in Senate's bailout bill

The financial rescue measure passed by the Senate on Wednesday included a series of tax incentives benefiting specific industries or states.  Where is the outrage?   How could anyone in power consider not putting the nation as a whole first instead of using a needed rescue bill as an opportunity to grab money for his or her district.  This is just flat out wrong.

On CNBC's Good Morning Joe this morning, they focused on this topic.  They noted that for the most part, no one is talking about who added these unthinkable pork barrel earmarks.   No one is talking about who is responsible for these selfish acts that don't belong.  And just the idea that there is no name attached to these multi-million dollar earmarks is just unthinkable.

Everyone on the hill is being quiet.  That's wrong too.  This is the epitome of what is wrong in Washington.  A bill for funds for "X" should be about "X", not "Y".  I can't say it any more simply.

When I hear this kind of behavior being conducted my our elected officials, my stomach turns in discuss.   Nothing like kicking a man when he's down - and in this case, it's the people of the United States.

Here are a few of the earmarks that made the current bailout bill.

Wooden arrows: This tax break, backed by Oregon's Senator Gordon Smith (R) and Senator Ron Wyden (D), would benefit an Oregon manufacturer of wooden arrows for children by $2 million over 10 years.

Racetracks: Earmark would allow auto racetrack owners to depreciate their facilities over seven years, saving the industry $100 million over two years.

Rum: Offers rum producers in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands a rebate on excise taxes worth $192 million over two years.

Wool: Reduces tariffs for U.S. makers of wool fabric that use imported yarn, worth $148 million over five years. The measure was pushed by Reps. Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y., and Melissa Bean, D-Ill.

Exxon Valdez: Plaintiffs in the suit over the 1989 oil spill could spread their tax payments on punitive damages over three years, cutting their tax bill by $49 million.   The measure was backed by Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska.

American Samoa:   Allows certain corporations to reduce their tax liability on income earned in American Samoa, at a cost of $33 million over two years.

Hollywood: Extends a tax break for film and TV companies that keep their production in the United States, worth $478 million over 10 years.   The provision was originally pushed by Rep. Diane Watson, D-Los Angeles.
